Fantasia has released her new single and cleared the air on remarks she made via Instagram that some perceived to be anti-gay. Now the one-time American Idol is focusing on her upcoming album of “rock-soul” and newly released single, “Lose to Win.”

“I feel like this project is my baby,” she said. “They allowed me to write… I always wanted to do something different. I love R&B but for the level I’m at now, I wanted to do something like Rock-Soul. When you hear Rock Soul, you think of Tina Turner. You think of James Brown. I wanted so bad to do something like that.”

The first single from the album, “Lose to Win” hit iTunes on Tuesday (January 8). She explained what it was about the song that caught her ear.

“I was blown alway with the feel,” she said. “[It’s like] The Commodores’ ‘Night shift.’ When I heard the track, I was done. When I heard the lyrics of the song, it wasn’t just about a relationship it was about my whole career. There have been ups and downs.”

Last week, Fantasia found herself in the middle of a storm of controversy. What was presumably an inspirational message to her Instagram followers turned out to offend the sensibilities of gay marriage proponents. On December 31, Fantasia sent a picture of herself in a meditative pose, with the following message:

“I Rise ABOVE IT ALL!!! THE WORLD IS GONE MAD. KIDS, THE GOVERNMENT THE church House… Everybody Trying!!!!!!! Its a lot that going on that the Bible speaks about we should Not be doing. Weed legal in some places, Gay Marriage Legal BUT YET IM JUDGED!!! I’m not doing Nothing for you… My Life!!!!”

“I’m not going to pedal back and say I regret what I said,” she told Steve Harvey. “They took it and turned it into something different. From day one, the gay community has supported me…A lot of my friends, most of my friebds my whole team, are supportive of me and they are gay guys. I dont judge anyone. That was my message. We need to stop trying to judge people. I support gay marriage and whoever you want to be with I don’t care.”

Now she is focusing on her new album, The Side Effects of You, which will hit stores March 2013.
