(Atlanta, Ga.) – Long-time state representative and civil rights leader Tyrone Brooks is being indicted on fraud and tax charges.
The U.S. Attorney’s office says he diverted nearly one-million dollars for personal use from two groups.
One was from Universal Humanities a charity he founded in 1990 intended to provide literacy training, and the Georgia Association of Black Elected Officials. Brooks is the president of GABEO.
In a statement, U.S. Attorney Sally Yates called it a disappointing day because of all the good that Brooks has done with his life.
Rep. Brooks told WAOK and V-103’s Cynthia Mallard that he will have “a response to the charges soon.”
