Montye Benjamin is still looking for answers in the 2013 shooting death of her son Jayvis. He was shot and killed by a police officer in Avondale Estates. According to police, Benjamin had stolen a car, and after crashing it, attacked the police. They say that’s when they shot him.

Felicia Thomas’ son Nicholas was shot in the back by a police officer in Smyrna, Georgia in 2015. A grand jury found the shooting to have been justified, though Thomas was unarmed. The officer said that he feared for the lives of his fellow officers, claiming that Thomas was trying to run over them with the car that he was driving at his tire shop job.

Benjamin and Thomas are members of the newly formed group Georgia Families of Police Brutality. Monday’s 2016 King Day March in downtown Atlanta was the first time that the families have come together under that name, carrying banners and posters with pictures of their family members killed at the hands of the police.

According to Thomas, “we have so much in common, and we knew that we needed to be able to come together, even if it’s just to be able to console one another.”
