Radiohead’s Ed O’Brien recently sat down with The Invisible frontman Dave Okumu for a long discussion about everything from music and God to Kanye West. During their chat about faith, O’Brien revealed that he spent an evening with West four years ago during Carnival in Rio de Janeiro after a mutual friend suggested the two musicians meet.

“I had an evening with Kanye West,” O’Brien in the middle of the interview, which was organized by the label Ninja Tune. “He wan’t interested in me at all. I sat there for three hours.”

The one thing O’Brien said that piqued West’s interest was a comment about British musicians and their belief in God.

“If you asked pretty much any British musician whether they believed in God, I’d tell you that 99% of them would say, ‘Don’t be stupid, of course not,'” O’Brien said. “It blew his mind. He was like, ‘You cannot be serious.'”

Radiohead’s guitarist happens to be a one percenter; he said faith has been “really important” to him.

“For me, life turned around when I had an extraordinary spiritual experience,” O’Brien recalled of a moment he had after seeing a healer in Brazil.

“I thought, oh my God, magic does exist. That for me was my Ground Zero day.”
