[PHOTO GALLERY] Fried Pig Ears, Pineapple Drinks And Politicians Its Sweet Auburn Springfest 2012![PHOTO GALLERY] Fried Pig Ears,…

Had you not known it was the annual Sweet Auburn Springfest, the stretch of historic downtown Atlanta might have been mistaken for some island locale Saturday – there were so many hands full of pina coladas and margaritas poured into fresh whole pineapple. But then again, when was the last time you found turkey legs at every other step in Turks & Caicos? Knee-high kids breaking out into a Michael Jackson routine in Maui? Or fried pig ears in, well, anywhere?

See it all, above!

Thousands gathered in front of the Georgia State Capitol Monday afternoon declaring to be one person: Trayvon Martin.

As it was exactly one month ago today that the 17-year-old of the same name was gunned down in Sanford, Fla. by a neighborhood watch captain claiming self defense. George Zimmerman told police dispatchers the hooded Martin looked suspicious as he walked through a gated neighborhood. But he was found unarmed, carryiny a bag of Skittles and a can of ice tea.

Zimmerman remains free under Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law, and in protest underneath the Gold Dome many were spotted holding Skittles and tea, and wearing hooded sweatshirts as the thermometer pulsed past the 80 degrees mark.

The “I Am Trayvon Martin” march and rally was organized by student leaders, local state and regional members of the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus, the Rainbow Push Coalition, NAACP, National Action Network and other groups.

“This is not a moment!” WAOK announcer and community activist Derrick Boazman declared. “We’ve got to make this a movement!”

WAOK-AM afternoon announcer and community activist Derrick Boazman joined in the protest of Gwinnett County Schools today for allowing math homework where scenarios included slaves picking oranges and a “Frederick” getting beaten.

“We were encouraged by the turnout today [at Beaver Ridge Elementary School],” Boazman said. “This is all that people have wanted to talk about since it happened. Parents are trying to figure out how to deal with this; and how to help their children interpret it.”

Boazman adds that those interested parties should join him Jan. 19 for the Gwinnett County Board of Education meeting at 7 p.m., 437 Old Peachtree Rd. in Suwanee. And you can sign up here to request to speak there.
