Retired NBA player Dwyane Wade and his wife, actress Gabrielle Union, spoke out in support of their 12 year old child, who recently came out as transgender. The couple's 12 year old who was born Zion Wade, recently told her parents to call her "Zaya".

"Meet Zaya. She's compassionate, loving, whip smart and we are so proud of her," Union posted to Twitter along with a video of her now-stepdaughter talking about her decision. In the video, Zaya appears to candidly explain that she doesn't see a point in denying her truth, even when others can be hateful.

After the news broke, Dwyane Wade was invited to appear on Ellen's show and spoke about embracing his 12-year-old's gender identity, and how he and his wife Gabrielle Union made it a priority to educate themselves about the LGBTQ+ community to give Zaya the opportunity to be her best self. The NBA star also opened up about the passing of his friend Kobe Bryant.
